Our German shepherd female Niki was able to read sheep from an early age
on. Her natural instinct allowed her to flourish as a herding dog. She was
suitable for all ages of sheep. She had the temperament that made her unique
and suitable for sheep. She showed good balance. She was gentle with the lambs
and dominant with aggressive rams. Niki was a strong well built female with
agility and power. With a thick solid body, while weighing 83 pounds, she
easily could pressure the larger Dorsets. Niki was a picture of health. She
always had a proud attitude when she was among the sheep. She could work as
a team or on her own. She had incredible spirit. She was always happy and
focused. Her abrupt death at 9 1/2 yrs was a total shock. Like all our other
GSDs that have passed on, she will always be fondly remembered and dearly
missed.

My
German shepherd farm dogs have displayed the same style of herding sheep. Upright
position, loose eyes. They come in close and will use their body to move the
sheep if they have to. Our dogs are relaxed among the sheep, most of the time
we are doing chores, not herding. Now that the large Dorsets are gone we no
longer use the dogs for herding. The hair sheep are easy to tame and don't require
any dog work. I tame our hair rams now at weaning around 4 months of age. We
sell a large number of breeding rams and they are easy to handle when they go
to their new homes. Most of our buyers have dogs and I prefer my rams to be
calm and trusting. Showing no fear and good temperament. Aulee comes and goes
in their pasture and walks in and out around their body, this way they learn
to trust and remain calm. .

Herding Dogs Niki and Aulee

Aulee
came to us when he was 2 years of age. He was over driven in prey drive while
being raised for dog sports. He is 8 years old now and has learned to focus
and channel his high energy. He is balanced in his drives and suitable for work
on the farm. Aulee is a wonderful all around companion. Obedient with high energy.
He is extremely athletic which means he is high maintenance. Like Niki, he views
the sheep as subordinates. We sheep farm and our sheep are valuable to us so
we expect our dogs to respect our sheep and our sheep to respect our dogs. Knowing
the dogs and the sheep, I can build off their natural instincts and get the
desired results I want.We live in harmony and life is good here on the farm.
Aulee is a handsome male with all the attributes and good temperament that one
would expect in a solid German shepherd working/companion dog.
